Tuck-Shop Overhaul Redefines Lunchtime

Kauai spearheads healthly school lunches.

Tuck-Shop Overhaul Redefines Lunchtime

It was posited earlier in the year that one of the international franchise trends to keep an eye on was that of healthy foods becoming more available for consumers wanting to live fast but healthy lifestyles.

The makings of a new concept

In a far cry from the school tuck-shops of a decade ago, with sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks and crisps, Kauai has taken a big step and opened four successful [email protected] stores – two in Cape Town, two in Gauteng.

“When we first came up with the [email protected] concept, we thought it would be a great initiative for schools to offer healthy foods and drinks for children and teachers at the school,” says Diane St Clair Moor, chief marketing officer for the Kaiai Group. “We’ve had interest from parents to become franchisees of the [email protected] concept, particularly among stay-at-home moms who were looking for a supplementary source of income while still being able to be there for their kids in the afternoon after school.”

The effects of food on performance

As the global populace becomes more health conscious, cutting out fats, sugars, preservatives and additives where possible, research is also showing that the foods we eat also affect our moods, mental capacity as well as mental function (including mood disorders such as anxiety, insomnia and depression), particularly in adolescents.

It makes sense, then, that the school menu offered by [email protected] offers nutritionally balanced lunch options such as wraps, sandwiches and snacks in portions that have been scaled back to cater to the appetites of children as well as their parent’s pockets. Hot meals and smoothies are also available for the extra nutrition punch.

“It makes absolute sense to offer healthy food to children at our school,” said Sheena Crawford-Kempster, director of Reddam House Cape Town, one of the locations of the new [email protected] units. “Since the launch of [email protected], the benefits for the students are clear as daylight. They are calmer, have improved focus and concentration and respond far better in class. And they have really warmed to the concept. The brand is funky and quite simply, they enjoy the food. We’ve also had great support from parents.”
