It’s long been thought that McDonald’s is the biggest fast-food chain on the planet. Truth be told it’s been neck-and-neck with Subways for the last few years, and with Subway opening 3 000 more locations worldwide this year, it’s set to take the lead – for now anyway.

The expansion will increase the sandwich brand’s footprint by 7%, and as of May, 973 new stores amounting to one third of the 3 000 goal had already been opened.

McDonald’s plans to hit back by opening 1 600 new stores and Starbucks’ target is 1 500 stores in the Americas and China-Asia Pacific region.
