Starbucks Likes It, But Won’t Put A Ring On It

Starbucks recently caused a ruckus amongst its employees by banning wedding and engagement rings as well as wrist jewellery (including medical information bracelets) from being worn by baristas and other food and beverage handling staff. The only exception to the newly stiffened dress code is if the ring is a plain band, no stones allowed.

The new dress code policy also states that no watches, bracelets or wristbands are allowed, while necklaces may be worn under employees’ clothes.

Staff are also not allowed to have painted fingernails. While these are fair requests that align to their food and safety rules, a further rule states that hair must look natural, with no bright colours permitted and “body ink is okay with some stipulations.”

What’s up with those kinds of rules?

Starbuck’s official dress code guide says, “We want customers to focus on you, not your body art. Tattoos are allowed, but not on your face or throat.” It goes on to state: “Less is more” when it comes to piercings, and a small nose stud and ear gauges are allowed.

But just before staff start feeling a little too stifled in their individual expression, employees may ‘jazz up’ their uniforms with a small scarf, necktie or bowtie.
