How Pizza is Leading the Internet

Did you know that 20 years ago, Pizza Hut sold its first pizza online ­– reportedly the first thing ever sold on the Internet.

Since then pizza chains have been leading the way in online sales innovation in a highly competitive industry.

Here are some pretty amazing facts:

  • In 2013, Pizza Hut’s online sales surpassed the $1 billion mark
  • Pizza Hut has an Xbox ordering app that generated more than $1 million in sales in its first four months
  • In October 2014, Domino’s Pizza debuted its voice-ordering system, letting customers order on a mobile app using their voice instead of fingers. Named Dom, the app is like Apple’s Siri
  • Smaller pizza chain, Toppers, anticipates as much as 90% of its sales will be online within ten years. Toppers founder and CEO, Scott Gittrich, notes how online is changing stores: With 50% of its business online, the stores are quieter, phones aren’t ringing, and fewer customers are in the lobby, but the orders just keep coming in.
