Taste Holdings has acquired small Western and Eastern Cape franchise chain Zebro’s Chicken for
R17 million. The move broadens the retail management group’s reach into the lower income market in much the same way as their existing Fish & Chip Co brand has.
The acquisition aims to offer potential and existing Taste franchisees additional investment opportunity with low start-up costs, and provide lower income brackets (LSM 4 to 6) with good quality, low price food.
Taste Holdings plans to aggressively expand the 40 strong chicken franchise in the same manner it did Fish & Chip Co, which is now over 300 national stores strong.
Not just another chicken take-away
“Zebro’s is a 15-year old brand with a good footprint already. Its products are prepared over an open fire similar to a braai, offering a familiar and well understood flavour profile to the market,” says Taste CEO Carlo Gonzaga.
“In fact, it’s arguably the only chain of its size using this preparation method and flavour profile. When I first heard of a chain that actually braaied its products, I didn’t think it was possible, yet over 15 years and 40 stores, these guys have built a system and preparation method that is tasty and also healthy.”
